Upgrade to Community Server 2007

Tuesday, May 01 2007 - , ,

Over the last few years I have been running this site (www.virtualrealm.com.au) and before that ircomm.net (Which has now been turned off). During this time I have looked at several different packages to manage the system.

I first started using community server 1.0 and 1.1 and found that the system was doing every thing that I needed at the time, but as things moved on I decided that I wanted to offer some more services and started to look around again. At this stage I looked at coding my own solution, but found that I was spending too much time playing with the code and not getting anything done.

Next I took the jump and had a go with DotNetNuke, with this I was trying to set up a community having blogs, community forums and file storage. Not long after that several factors changed and I scaled right back and decided to just host my blog, for this I ended up with DasBlog.

But when a changing moment in my life came about I decided to start my own business so the domain changed and so did the attitude, I went home to Community Server 2.1. Now the main problem here was the data I had collected over the years needed to be migrated. What I found was BlogML.

With BlogML and some really handy modifications to the community server system and a custom application for DasBlog I was able to migrate all of the data over to Community Server 2.1.

Now after almost 12 months I have finally finished the move to the New Community Server 2007 system. The upgrade process was simple and easy to go through, even in a hosted environment. I did have some small gotchas during the install, but stepping back, getting some sleep and some really helpful people from communityserver.org and www.orcsweb.com the system started up as it should.

The next stage is to start playing with the new Community Server 2007 skinning system and adding the custom modules that I plan to use.

The good thing though is that in its current state the www.virtualrealm.com.au is now ready to run and host, so if there are XNA Game Developers out there who are thinking of starting to Blog drop me a line and we can talk.

BTW: I would really like to here from Australian XNA Developers, come and tell thee world what is coming out of Australia in relation to XNA Development.
