First Look at TrueSpace 7.6

Friday, July 25 2008 - ,

You might have all heard by now Caligari has released TrueSpace 7.6 for free, this will allow us to use the system to put together our artwork for our XNA Games and Virtual Earth Programs.

Well today I had a chance to look at the product (Rostered Day Off), and from what I see of the product it looks like it is going to be easy to use.

The first step was the download, when you first get to the site you are asked to register for the site and where then given the download page. The packages are large in size and do not really take that long to download. But I do recommend downloading the complete tutorials, videos and manuals.

In the past I have been using 3D Studio Max and Blender 3D, but have also used almost all of the modelling packages that are around in one form or another, this includes Caligari's GameSpace. One thing that I did find while playing with TrueSpace is that I have really gotten used to the Keyboard shortcuts that are used in the Blender 3D Interface, I think it is going to take me a little time to stop wanting to use them.

But in the end I am happy with TrueSpace and feel that I will give it a real go and see how it performs over time. One thing that I know I will miss is the Rendering, It looks like I will have to get an external tenderer for my final renders, but at least the models can be created for my XNA Projects.

There are a couple of things that I am still looking at and I will post about them shortly. These include the UV Mapping and Texturing, Animation and Rigging, as well as transferring the work to some XNA Projects.

Glenn, do you feel that the lack of an .fbx exporter is a big deal? Is this new .x exporter "good enough"?

I'm not too up on the differences between the formats, but doesn't .fbx have the ability to contain multiple meshes while .x does not? Are there other differences?

At this point in time I can not see any problems with just having the x exporter. But the ability for FBX would make the package a bit more appealing. But as the XNA Framework uses Content Importers, I can forsee a content pipline extension for the trueSpace file format appearing soon.
