Sound, Music and Effects for your XNA Applications

Friday, May 23 2008

With the introduction of XNA there is going to be a large requirement for new sound resources that we can all use. These could be in the way of Sound Libraries that are used for Non-Commercial or Commercial use. What I am planning on doing here is collecting a list of resources that we can all use in our projects.

But please note you need to make sure that the sounds and systems you are using are actually able to be used in your projects, in some cases you may have to track down the authors of the resource to see if you can.

Complete Sound Collections
The following section has large collections of all sound resources, this includes Music, Sound Effects and Loops.

The Freesound Project

The Freesound Project is a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds. Freesound focuses only on sound, not songs. This is what sets freesound apart from other splendid libraries like ccMixter. New to this site? Read the What is Freesound page to learn more!

Free Sound Effects
Here is a collection of resources that Offer Free Sound Effects.

PacDV - Free Sound Effects

This is a small collection of free sound Effects that you are free to use. Here is a message from the Sites Author on the Sound Effects.

"You may use the sound effects on this web site free of charge in your video, film, audio and multimedia productions (but do not re-sell them or post on a web site for download)."

A1 Free Sound Effects

Large collection of Sound Effects, please make sure you read the conditions for Non-Profit and Commercial Use of the Effects.

"A1 Free Sound Effects was developed over five years ago on 8-11-01, we want to provide you the public with our Free Sound Effects that you can download to your computer and use for church, school, home or for any non-profit project. Commercial Sounds Available.

We've Recorded all of the Free Sound Requests that we've had since 7/99 and placed most of them on this site so I'm sure that you'll find a Free Sound Effect that you will need for your Sound Project.

We also create Funny Cartoon Voices, Computer Generated Voices and Normal Voices."

"Non Profit  /  Personal Use: Everyone can download and use the sound effects for FREE... any School, Church, Student, Teacher or Non Profit Corporation can use the sounds for free in any Home Use, Church Event or Classroom Project. Direct linking to a sound is not allowed!!!!

Commercial Use: Any Commercial use of the Sound Effects requires permission from A1 Free Sound Effects. We will grant you the right to use any of the sound effects with the purchase of Our Commercial CD."

Tintagel's Free Sound File Archive

Here is a large Collection of Free Resources...

"These sound files are provided free of charge, without any representation or warranty whatsoever. To the best of our knowledge, all wave, midi, and audio files presented here are in the public domain and are available for use without restriction."

UTEMS

Large Collection of unsorted Sounds Effects that are Free to use.

"This sound archive is a current work in progress. The sounds contained here are the result of the MUS329G class. Over the course of three projects, they were instructed to gather sound and use them as their own sound library. With their permission, these sounds have been posted and are free to use. The sounds are in no order other than alphabetical and contain no description except the file name give by the person recording them. Sounds were recorded using a Sony Minidisc Player and studio recording directly into Protools or Sound Forge through a Digi001 or a Audiolink Multiface."

Sound Effects

Brandens

Branden has a large collection of sound effects, Music Files and Sound Loops. At present I do not know the copyrights on them or if they can be used, but it is still a good collection.

Dont forget http://www.soundsnap.com. Most are licensed under the creative commons I believe, and there is a HUGE archive of custom sounds, music, loops and more!

I'll second the recommendation for SoundSnap - I've found that handy as well for my current project...
